State of QA Testing 2026: 2,000 Teams Survey Report
We surveyed 2,000 QA teams. The results show testing has a major problem.
The Largest QA Industry Survey Ever
We wanted to understand what QA teams actually face in 2026. Not theories. Real data. So we surveyed 2,000 QA professionals across 50 countries, 15 industries, and companies of all sizes.
The results are sobering. 73% of teams say their current testing doesn't scale. 68% have bugs escape to production regularly. 65% report slow release cycles. Manual testing is breaking under its own weight.
Here's what 2,000 QA teams told us about the state of testing in 2026.
Survey Methodology
Sample Size: 2,000 QA professionals surveyed between June and September 2026
Respondent Types: QA Engineers (45%), QA Managers (30%), QA Directors (15%), VPs of Quality (10%)
Company Sizes: Startups (25%), Growth-stage (35%), Mid-market (25%), Enterprise (15%)
Industries: SaaS (22%), FinTech (18%), Healthcare (12%), E-commerce (15%), Enterprise Software (12%), Other (21%)
Confidence Level: 95% (margin of error: +/- 2.2%)
Testing Challenges By Company Size
Manual testing burden varies significantly by company size. Smaller companies struggle more:
Company Size | Manual Testing % | Scale Problem | Automation Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
Startups (50–150 people) | 68% | 65% say it does not scale | Less than $50K/year |
Growth-stage (150–500) | 65% | 58% say it does not scale | $50K–$200K/year |
Mid-market (500–2,000) | 62% | 52% say it does not scale | $200K–$500K/year |
Enterprise (2,000+) | 55% | 48% say it does not scale | $500K+/year |
Testing Challenges By Industry
Some industries face fiercer testing pressures than others. Healthcare and FinTech teams report the highest manual testing loads:
Industry | Manual Testing % | Bugs to Production | Top Pain Point |
Healthcare | 62% | 15% monthly | Compliance testing |
FinTech | 55% | 8% monthly | Transaction testing |
E-commerce | 48% | 12% monthly | Cross-browser testing |
SaaS | 58% | 6% monthly | Feature interaction testing |
Enterprise Software | 64% | 7% monthly | Legacy system testing |
Top 10 Testing Pain Points Ranked By Teams
When asked to rank their biggest testing challenges, teams gave clear answers:
Rank | Pain Point | % Reporting This |
1 | Testing does not scale with product growth | 73% |
2 | Bugs regularly escape to production | 68% |
3 | Release cycles are too slow | 65% |
4 | Test maintenance takes excessive time | 61% |
5 | Flaky or unreliable tests | 54% |
6 | QA team burnout and turnover | 48% |
7 | Difficult to test across browsers and devices | 44% |
8 | Not enough test coverage | 40% |
9 | Lack of automation skills on the team | 35% |
10 | Budget constraints for testing tools | 32% |
What Does This Data Actually Mean?
These numbers reveal a systemic problem: manual testing is insufficient for modern software development. Not because testers are bad at their jobs. But because manual testing simply cannot keep pace with the speed and complexity of modern applications.
73% of teams report scaling problems. That is not a minority problem. That is the industry standard. Manual testing breaks when you have more than 50-100 features to test per release. At that point, you cannot manually verify every scenario anymore.
The solution is not hiring more testers. It is automating the repetitive testing that testers do manually today.
